ABOUT US: DIRECTORS

Dr Hugh Saddler - Managing Director
Dr Saddler has a degree in science from Adelaide University and a PhD from Cambridge University. He is the author of a book on Australian energy policy, 'Energy in Australia' and over 70 scientific papers, monographs and articles on energy technology and environmental policy, as well as a regular commentator in print and electronic media. He is recognised as one of Australia's leading energy and greenhouse policy experts. Over the years he has held official appointments on a large number of advisory bodies to Australian, WA and ACT governments. Between 1991 and 1995 he was a member of the Board of the ACT Electricity and Water Authority. In January 2009 he was appointed an Adjunct Professor at the Australian National University, jointly between the Crawford School of Economics and Government and the Fenner School of Environment and Society.
Dr Saddler has been a self-employed consultant specialising in energy technology and environmental policy and economics since 1982. Prior to 1982 he held research positions at Sydney University and the Australian National University, and was seconded to the Commonwealth public service for two years. He also spent some years in the early 1970s working in London and Rotterdam with a leading British firm of economic and management consultants. His first work on energy policy was in the UK, in 1973, at the time of the first oil shock, and this has been his main professional interest since.
Following the breakup of his original consulting company in 1996, he established Energy Strategies, the forerunner to Sustainability Advice Team, in 1996, as a business which combined high level consultancy on energy and environmental policy issues with the provision of expert technical advice on energy efficiency and renewable energy. At the beginning of 2009 the two parts of the business were separated. The policy consultancy business became part of pitt&sherry, for which Dr Saddler works on a part time basis, while SustainAbility Advice Team was established to continue to undertake the advisory and service delivery business.
