PROGRAMS: SCHOOL AUDIT
How can my school get an audit?
All 87 ACT Government Schools have been audited under the ACT Department of Education and Training (DET) and the ACT Department of Environment, Climate Change, Energy and Water (DECCEW) School Energy Audit Program. Some Independent and Catholic schools have also been audited.
If you are an Independent or Catholic Systemic School and would like an energy audit, please contact us for a quote.
What is a school energy audit?
A school energy audit will help you to determine where and how savings can be made to electricity and gas usage whilst maintaining or improving comfort and services. An energy audit can help to encourage the involvement of the whole school community (students, staff and parents) in understanding energy use. The energy audit can also be used to support submissions for grant funding such as the National Solar Schools Program (NSSP).
What do we do?
The SustainAbility Advice Team (SAT) is one of only a handful of companies in Australia that specialises in school energy auditing. The school energy audit process has three stages:
- Bill Data Analysis
- Walk Through Audit
- Data analysis and reporting
Past and present bill data is analysed to provide a benchmark of energy use at the school. Bill data is used to show how energy is used daily, weekly, monthly and annually at the school. Variations in energy use show how well a school operated during core school hours and also how well it is able to shut down its systems overnight, on weekends and through longer school holiday periods.
Experienced SustainAbility Advice Team auditors visit each school site to record what equipment is at the school and how it is used. By recording how much equipment is used and how long it is used for, we are able to give a breakdown of where energy is being used in the school (for example, how much energy is being used for lighting, heating and cooling, computing, or in the canteen). During the audit, the SAT auditor will record information about the school building(s), such as shading, orientation, building structure, insulation levels and window types, while also investigating any behavioural issues within the school (for example: are lights being left on in rooms that are unoccupied? Are doors left ajar?).
SAT auditors use all of the information gathered from the walk through audit and bill data analysis to create a report which documents the findings of the audit. The report includes discussions about past energy use at the school, a breakdown of present energy use and recommendations on how to reduce the school’s energy use in the future.
The energy audit report can be used to support submissions for grant funding, such as the National Solar Schools Program (NSSP).
